Signal has a new feature that may make you want to delete WhatsApp
If you are tired of ‘Good Morning’ images that you receive on WhatsApp everyday among other photos that flood your chats and also occupy your phone storage, then rival messaging app Signal has a feature which may make you want to delete WhatsApp right now. Signal through its beta channel released a new feature for Android and iOS apps that takes care of this problem.
Photos and videos sent over Signal can be automatically removed from a conversation thread after they have been viewed. The new “view-once” feature will not permanently store media files by default unless you want them to be stored.

“When you send a “view-once” media message, the image or video won’t be permanently stored in the sender or recipient’s conversation history. Instead, an empty “Viewed” media indicator helps maintain context without maintaining the file,” said Signal in an official blog post.

While creating a multimedia file you will get the option to choose whether you want the media file to stay forever or delete automatically. The feature includes a button that will let media messages to be switched between “persistence and ephemerality”.

For those unaware, the co-founder of WhatsApp-- Brian Acton-- left the company after Facebook acquired it. He then moved ahead to create the Signal Foundation with Moxie Marlinspike. The Signal messaging app is like what WhatsApp used to be earlier and offers better privacy. There is end-to-end encryption by default powered by the open source Signal Protocol.

The app is available on both Android and iOS. You can use Signal to make voice and video calls too. There are no fancy features like Status. It is completely free and there is Dark Mode too, which is missing in WhatsApp.

Along with this new feature, there is also an option to to send “Disappearing messages”. When this is enabled, messages sent and received in individual chats will disappear after it has been seen.
